Computers have taken over the world and the internet follows closely behind.  There are many ways to access the internet (cell phones, pda's, laptop computers, netbooks, as well as the desktop computer).  Most of which are common place in everyday life.  The internet has infiltrated the everyday life to the extent that access to it is almost as necessary as having water and electric service.

Yet on an hourly basis people get scammed for money, lose their credit cards and even their lives to hackers and scam artists.  People constantly hear about these in the news but never realize that the confident are the victims.  Computer security is a constantly moving field.  What was safe yesterday is a risk today.  There is no system that is totally impervious to hackers save a stand alone system. Although to make a system completely safe would require disconnecting from the internet which for most defeats the purpose for most people.

There are  eight steps to keeping your computer safe;

  • Update the OS regularly
  • Use a good antivirus/internet security program
  • respect your software, if a site gets blocked by your security system don't bypass it.  You payed good money for it to secure your computer get your moneys worth from it;
  • Don't download attachments from unknown sources.
  • Set your computer to display extentions
  • don't download files from untrusted sources.
  • Learn to spot fake e-mails.  (Pay pal, most banks and Windows have been cloned by hackers to try to trick users into giving out personal information to them.)
  • Only give personal information through secure servers of trusted sites.
  • update your antivirus program regularly. (virus's, worms and trojans come out just as quick as new software so update regularly so it can detect and remove even the newest of virus's
Follow these steps and your computer will be as safe as possible while maintaining internet access.
